Established in 1893, Stags’ Leap Winery is one of the oldest wine estates within the acclaimed Stags Leap district, continually producing wines expressive of its unique terroir. With an enduring wine making philosophy of minimal intervention, and by using the finest grapes from our own 85-acre vineyard and from quality-focused growers, Stags’ Leap wines embody a natural balance, exhibiting both intensity and finesse.
A dry winter gave way to rains in early spring, and temperate weather at the time of bud break brought little in the way of frost damage. Flowering and fruit set were facilitated by dry weather in late spring, and a relatively moderate summer gave the fruit ample time to ripen slowly to its full potential. There was a brief rain event in early/mid-October, but by that time the vast majority of the grapes were safely in the winery.
The Leap is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from the finest blocks in our Stags’ Leap Winery estate vineyard. This singular expanse of earth tucked up against the eastern palisades of Napa Valley features thin, rocky soils in its upper reaches, giving way to finer-grained loamy soils at its floor. The heat-reflecting rocky crags that tower above the estate combine with cooling breezes from the south to create a micro-climate phenomenally well-suited to growing Cabernet Sauvignon grapes of distinction.
The Leap is a barrel selection, a blend of the best Cabernet Sauvignon blocks, lots and sub-lots in a given vintage. The wine was selected from over 20 blocks and numerous lots held separately in French oak barrels for 20 months and blended just prior to bottling. Keeping the lots separate allows Winemaker Christophe Paubert to evaluate and “grow” each lot individually, coaxing each to its maximum potential. A mix of fifty percent new and seasoned barrels allows the oak to “broadcast” but never overshadow the fruit.
Aromatic intensity and flavor concentration define The Leap Cabernet Sauvignon, which displays well-delineated flavors of black cherry, blueberry and cassis. With silky tannins that spread warmly over the palate, the fruit is lifted by the restrained use of oak and buttressed with notes of fresh herbs, licorice and coffee bean. This is an iconic Stags’ Leap Winery Cabernet that showcases our longstanding heritage and commitment to meticulous winegrowing.
